  1. The housing market is strong and well-maintained homes are selling at great prices fast.
  2. Because interest rates are low, the market is flooded with buyers, and it can be hard for homeowners to find a new house once their current residence sells.
  3. Winter is on its way. Snow and ice can wreak havoc on home structures and must be removed from sidewalks and driveways on a regular basis.

“Don’t miss your window of opportunity,” said Carolyn Martin, administrator at The Village of East Harbor. “We don’t want you to have any regrets. Who knows what will happen next year?”

The Village of East Harbor is a senior living community that includes independent villas and apartments, assisted living amenities licensed as home for the aged, short-term rehabilitation services, long term nursing care and memory care. This past year the community opened Harbor Inn, a new addition built in response to overwhelming demand for new units. Ground broke on the 36 ranch apartments with private entrances and amenities like one-car attached garages; 60 mid-rise apartments; and a new wellness center in November 2020. These units are now available and many residents who moved in already are busy meeting their neighbors, exploring various activities and enjoying the extra free time they have since they no longer must rake leaves, clean gutters and shovel snow, said Martin.

Residents love the open floor plan of the new ranch units, which come fully equipped with a kitchen, pantry, 8-foot ceilings with coves, high grade finishes, oversized windows, stackable washer/dryer unit and concrete patio slab perfect for outdoor entertaining.

The midrise building, which include 62 one- and two-bedroom independent living apartments, is equally as stunning. Each apartment is furnished with a full appliance package and some have a balcony or patio. Carports are available and all units are pet friendly.

The best part? All these home choices are move-in ready.

“We have homes that are ready for people to move into pretty quickly,” she said.

See for yourself

A few times each year, The Village of East Harbor opens its doors so visitors and guests can see for themselves what makes the community a great place to live and put down roots. The new wellness center will be open for tours. Those who reserve their spot can enjoy lunch, a peek at the wellness center and all its amenities and take tours of available ranch homes.

These events are a great time to talk with residents and get a feel for the campus.

“We want you to feel at home,” said Martin. “The best way for potential residents to experience everything we have to offer is to attend a tour event or schedule an appointment with a leasing specialist for a tour. We know you’re going to love it here.”

Meet your new neighbors

The residents at The Village of East Harbor and Harbor Inn are a diverse group of adults who enjoy a variety of experiences. Within the community, there are plenty of things to do and see, like concerts and special events as well as games, sports, fitness classes, hobbies, clubs and more. Residents can also enjoy seasonal fun, such as the recent Fall Harvest festivities, Halloween costume contest and Craft and Trunk Sale.

All these activities take place on the spacious 44-acre campus, but residents also have access to transportation for shopping, medical appointments and errands. Many residents also prefer to the convenience of driving themselves around town to visit their favorite restaurants and places of worship. The Village of East Harbor promotes independent living, so residents are welcome to come and go as they please, participate in only the activities that interest them and form new friendships within the community while maintaining their relationships with friends and family near and far.

For those who need assistance, a variety of support services are available as needed. Residents recovering from surgery, an illness or injury can take advantage of short-term rehabilitation services. If their daily needs change, there are many care options like enhanced living, home for the aged, memory care, skilled nursing care, long term nursing care and respite services available. Residents can easily and swiftly transition into other living arrangements as needed.

A focus on wellness

The Village of East Harbor has an on-site fitness center with a variety of exercise equipment and numerous class options available. The goal is to keep residents happy and healthy. With the addition of the new wellness center, services have expanded for those ages 55 and older.

Meeting fitness, wellness and spiritual needs is a top priority for Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, the not-for-profit organization that operates The Village of East Harbor and dozens of other senior living communities throughout the state. Construction of the new wellness center demonstrates the emphasis on healthy living and the benefits of physical, mental and social health.

For many seniors, isolation and loneliness can be a real challenge to overcome, particularly during the winter months when snow and ice can keep them from attending activities they enjoy and socializing with friends and family. Some struggle to connect with new people after longtime neighbors move away. Others need to fill the void left after retirement when daily conversations with colleagues are no longer available.

The Village of East Harbor residents enjoy living among their peers who have similar common interests. New residents are welcomed and it is easy to forge new bonds and friendships with others while participating in activities of interest to them.
