May is Older Americans Month. It is more important than ever that we recognize the positive impact older Americans have made on our society and to assure that we join with them in a meaningful life. We are pleased to share an Older Americans Month message from the Administration for Community Living which houses The Administration on Aging at the federal level. The promise of spring and summer with all of its glorious sights and sounds heralds in a promise for a better future.

We have been heartened by all of the amazing acts of kindness toward our residents and staff during these times and hope that others will join in. During this important month please call a senior in your circle of friends, family and neighbors. Or treat them to a carryout meal and a special treat package. Even better, connect with them via FaceTime if possible. And senior to senior communication is just as important. Many of our residents have called on others to make sure they are okay and to simply have a conversation. This is also a gift to ourselves. Focusing on others provides joy to the human psyche. Enjoy!

Older Americans Month was celebrated for the first time in 1965, when the Older Americans Act (OAA) was signed into law. Fifty-five years later, the nationwide system of organizations, services and programs established under the OAA continue to work together to help older adults live independently in their communities. That work has never been more important, so we had a lot to celebrate when the OAA was reauthorized earlier this year!

More than half a century later, Older Americans Month (OAM) is still going strong, too. Each year, we celebrate a little differently. We choose a fresh theme – this year, it’s “Make Your Mark” – and share suggested activities to celebrate the contributions of older adults to our communities across the country.
